Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (2/1/2012) – Both sides survived a dismal first half, only to compete in another closely played Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Chestnut Hill College held the advantage midway through the closing period, but the University of the Sciences (USciences) battled back with defense and claimed a 47-44 victory on their home court. Senior forward
Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH) offered 11 points, six rebounds, and a block as the Griffins top performer.
Stayrook got Chestnut Hill College (4-14, 3-8) off to a 4-0 lead with the contest's first two buckets (16:57), but USciences (12-8, 8-4) fared slightly better (23.8%-16.0%) through a rough first half. Behind the determination of freshman guard Brianne Traub (Wayne, NJ), the Devils fought through 13 first-half turnovers to hold a narrow 14-13 advantage at halftime. After intermission both sides fared much better (50.0%-44.0%), but neither managed to separate by more than three points. The Griffins were first to do so, grabbing a 36-32 lead at 9:22 on a three-point basket from freshman guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, NJ). Unfortunately, the Devils answered behind the two-way play of junior forward Carolyn Edwards (Huntingdon Valley, PA), who scored ten points and three steals in the half. She brought the Devils to a 43-36 lead with 5:16 to play, and helped them survive the Griffins final defensive push, 45-42 (2:01), before claiming the three-point victory.
Edwards scored 13 points to go along with three steals and a block. She had plenty of help on defense with four blocks from Traub and three blocks from freshman center Isabella Ross (Philadelphia, PA). Traub also scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Ross was a key Devil reserve with five points, five rebounds, and three assists in addition to her defense.
Gorczynski totaled eight points, hitting two from long range (2-of-8, 25.0%) to compliment Stayrook's effort in the post. Junior forward
Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) directed the Griffin offense with six assists.
The women's basketball team returns home to host Nyack College in a 1:00 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, February 4.
