Late First-Half Run Carries Eagles over Griffins

Box Score Waterbury, CT – (2/11/2012) – Post University closed the first half with a hot streak of outside shooting to own a 50-40 halftime lead, before defeating Chestnut Hill College 83-77 in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The Eagles used their ten-point advantage to sustain the rallying efforts of junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) and senior forward Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH), who combined for 24 points and 16 rebounds in the Griffins superior second half.

Chestnut Hill College (6-17, 5-11) drew first blood with freshman guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, NJ) hitting three from long range in an opening stanza that left the Griffins up 36-24 at the seven-minute mark (7:09) of the first half. Post University (7-16, 5-11) fired back, closing the opening period on a 26-4 tilt behind the two-headed attack of senior guard Kelli Reynolds (Milford, CT) and junior guard Aubrey Latham (Mystic, CT). Both hit two from beyond the arch to support the Eagles 9-of-15 (60.0%) first-half, three-point, shooting performance. At the start of the second half, the Eagles lead briefly grew to 15, 57-42 (16:42), before the Griffins responded behind the post and slash combination of Stayrook and senior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA). The Griffins closed the gap to eight, 60-52, by 12:21, but the Eagle lead would fluctuate back up to as many as 13, 73-60 (6:00), before the final push. They cut the spread to four three times in the final 36 seconds, the last time came at 81-77, but with only 40 seconds left in regulation time ran out on the Griffins.
 
Reynolds' 19 points and nine rebounds led the Eagles, but she was well supported by the play of Latham and junior guard Casey Brooks (Highland, NY). Latham supplied 17 points and six rebounds, while Brooks totaled 16 points and six assists. Sophomore guard Raven Wright-James (Middletown, CT) contributed 11 points to the win.
 
Alexander and Stayrook both totaled 15 points and ten rebounds for double-double performances. It was Stayrook's first of the season and she paired it with three steals. For Alexander, it was her third. She also recorded four assists and a block. Four other Griffins reached double figures. Freshman guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, NJ) supplied 11 points, three rebounds, and four steals. Freshman guard Lila Jones (Lansdale, PA) was a major first-half factor, she finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Smith and Gorczynski each scored ten points.
 
The women's basketball team plays their next CACC contest at Goldey-Beacom College; tip-off is schedule for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15.
