2/15/2012 11:14:00 PM

Box Score Wilmington, DE – (2/15/2012) – Play atop the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division remains rough as Chestnut Hill College battled Goldey-Beacom College to a tightly-played 63-61 overtime loss this evening. The Lightning forced overtime with free throws and in an uneventful extra period they used the game's final possession to survive the Griffins. Junior guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) led the Griffins with 13 points, ten rebounds, five assists, and five steals. The Griffins and Lightning will meet again in their final game of the CACC season, on Tuesday, February 21, with playoff seeding still in flux.

After a three-point basket from junior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ), Chestnut Hill College (17-10, 10-5) led 53-46 with 7:37 left to play in regulation. Unfortunately, behind the offense of sophomore A.J. Picard (Skippack, PA) and the hustle of senior forward Tariq Uqdah (Lanham, MD) Goldey-Beacom College (15-9, 12-5) managed to tie the contest, 57-57, on a layup from graduate guard Jordan Brooks (Mitchellville, MD) with 2:40 still to go. DiRugeris would give the Griffins the lead back, 59-57, by converting free throws earned on a rebound put back at 1:55, but on the following Lightning possession graduate forward Rich Flemming (Chester, PA) drew a fifth foul on senior forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) and hit both of his free throws to force overtime, 59-59. Overtime opened with a stalemate, which was broken on a Flemming layup with 3:01 remaining in period, 61-59. The Griffins struggled to respond, as Bogans converted their fourth chance at the tie with 35 seconds to go, 61-61. After a Lightning timeout, Uqdah weighted out the clock for a last-second, 1-on-1 opportunity. He would come up large for the home team, scoring the drive for the 63-61 victory.

Uqdah was a workhorse for the Lightning, leading their winning effort with ten points, 17 rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Flemming was the evening's leading scorer with 17 points, while Picard was the third Lightning in double figures with 13 points. Brooks provided nine assists and five steals.

Comas complimented Ashe's first career double-double effort with 12 points, five rebounds, and a steal. Bogans was a key contributor for the Griffins as well, he recorded 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

The men's basketball team visits Bloomfield College for their next CACC contest. A 3:00 p.m. tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, February 18.
