Porter Propels Chargers over Griffins in CACC Quarterfinals

Box Score Orangeburg, NJ – (2/25/2012) – A 27-point performance from junior guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) propelled the #2N Dominican College to a 79-70 victory over #3S Chestnut Hill College in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Quarterfinal matchup at the Hennessey Center. The Chargers point man took over midway through the first half to provide the home team with a 42-33 halftime advantage, the nine-point deficit would remain at the final buzzer.
 
Play between Chestnut Hill College (18-12) and Dominican College (19-8) early, with senior forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) knotting the contest at 19-19 with 13:09 left in the opening half. That's when Porter ignited a 16-5 Charger run, he scored 12 points in the in the seven minute slide (6:08), which left the Griffins behind a 35-34 deficit. Fortunately, play was even until halftime to leave the spread 42-33 at intermission. The Chargers were able to keep their distance for most of the second half with the Griffins making their push in the final four minutes. A steal by junior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) ended in a pair of free throws for freshman guardLuke Dickson (Pitman, NJ), closing the margin to seven, 69-62 with 2:56 remaining. A three-point basket from freshman guard Torrell Candelaria (Philadelphia, PA) would make it five points, 72-67, with 1:56 on the clock, and a DiRugeris jumper cut it to three, 72-69, with 1:43 left to play. Forced to foul, the Griffins put the Chargers at the line to test their command of the contest. Porter hit the first two that were required, 74-69, and his teammates hit the rest too advance the Chargers to next week's CACC Semifinal Round.
 
Porter was 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the floor, including a 3-of-6 (50.0%) clip from long range, in his game-high scoring performance. He was also perfect (6-of-6) from the free throw line. Junior forward Cory Quimby (Otisville, NY) and senior forward Michael Calzonetti (Gloucester, NJ) supported Porter with double-double efforts. Each recorded 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a block, Calzonetti also provided four assists.
 
DiRugeris hit three from long range (3-of-4, 75.0%) in a 17-point evening. He also recorded four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Comas contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and an assist, while Candelaria totaled ten points and five rebounds off the bench. Freshman forward Alssene Saintilus (Irvington, NJ) chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, and junior guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) was a factor on both ends of the court with nine points, five rebounds, six assists, a block, and two steals.

The men's basketball team finishes the 2011-2012 season with an 18-12 overall record, their best since becoming a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II program in the 2007-2008 season. They also enjoyed their best CACC season with an 11-6 league standing.
