2/28/2012 4:56:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Myrtle Beach, SC – (2/27/2012) – After a disappointing doubleheader sweep at the hands of Molloy College, Chestnut Hill College concluded their participation in the Northeast Challenge, at the Ripken Experience Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, February 25, and a single, nine-inning contest against C.W. Post University on Sunday, February 25.

In the first game against Ravens, a rash of second-inning singles helped Franklin Pierce University (3-1) stake an earlier 3-1 advantage. Each side added a run in the third inning, 4-2, before the Ravens padded the spread with a run in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh. With four singles in their final at-bat, Chestnut Hill College (1-4) scored two runs only to fall by a 6-4 final. Senior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) led the Griffins with three hits and a run-batted-in (RBI). Senior pitcher John Flack (Upper Holland, PA) took the loss (0-1) for the Griffins; he allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in three inning of work.

The hits were scarce in the second contest. After a lead-off single, the Ravens used a double from junior shortstop Dan Kemp (Sturbridge, MA) and a single from graduate center fielder James Roche (Arlington, MA) to take a commanding 3-0 first-inning lead. Both sides put a run across in the fourth inning, 4-1, and the sixth inning, 5-2, before Raven freshman pitcher, Kris Doyle (Millbury, MA) closed the door. Freshman third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ), freshman left fielder Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA), and sophomore catcher Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA) recorded the Griffins three hits, while freshman pitcher Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, PA) was credited with the loss (0-1). He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three in four innings of work.

Against the C.W. Post University (3-2), the Griffins trailed the Pioneers 5-3 heading to the eighth inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Griffins manufactured a run to reduce the deficit to one, 5-4. A lead-off walk to freshman pinch hitter Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, NY) became a runner at third base following the entry and aggressive base running of freshman Nick Naumann (Bel Air, MD). He would later score on a Latchum double. After a scoreless top of the ninth, the Griffins went to work in their final at-bat. Consecutuive singles for junior shortstop Joe Crane (Newtown, PA), McLaughlin, senior right fielder Andrew Koziol (Wilmington, DE), and Mullin produced the first run, 5-5. A fifth in the sequence, this one from Naumann, would act as the game-winner in a stunning 6-5, walk-off victory. Three Griffins recorded two hits, highlighted by a 2-for-5 effort with an RBI double from sophomore first baseman Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA). Crane was credited with the win (1-0) after allowing only a walk in three innings of scoreless relief.

The men's baseball team returns to action with their home opener against West Chester University on Thursday, March 1. First pitch at Latshaw-McCarthy Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
