Stellar Second Half Defense Puts Warriors Away; Griffins Win Third Straight at Home

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (2/4/2012) – Chestnut Hill College only led Nyack College by five at halftime, 41-36, but immediately following intermission the Griffins streaked out to a 19-point advantage, 61-42 (12:05), behind the three-headed attack of freshman guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, NJ), junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA), and senior forward Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH). The Griffin lead escalated until the final buzzer, leaving the home team with an 85-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) triumph over the Warriors.
 
The first half was closely played with the CACC rivals settling on their final tie of the period with 7:18 to play, 22-22. Nyack College (1-16, 1-11) briefly grabbed the lead at that point, 6:58, with freshman guard Brianna Taylor (Columbia, MD) hitting a three-point basket, 25-22, to give them the edge. Chestnut Hill College (5-15, 4-9) reclaimed the lead, 35-34, with 1:43 remaining and after a flurry of Warrior missed shots; Alexander free throws increased the Griffin advantage to five, 41-36, by the break. Both teams shot well in the period, 45.5% (15-of-33) for the Griffins and 57.7% (15-of-26) for the Warriors, but nine Warriors turnovers and more opportunities at the free throw line kept play in the Griffins favor. Following halftime the Warriors turned the ball over of five straight possession, letting the margin slip to 15, 55-40, just before the 14-minutes mark (14:06). It continued to grow as time wore on as a united Griffin front shared the ball, a season-high 18 assists, until the clock expired.
 
Junior guard Khamari Tellis (Chicago, IL) led four Warriors in double figures with 12 points. She also offered four rebounds, three assists, and two steals as the Warriors top performer. Junior guard Ashley Tallman (Rotterdam, NY) and freshman forward Brianna McKellery (Odenton, MD) each contributed 11 points; Tallman led the Warriors on the glass with six rebounds and McKellery accounted for all but five bench points. Senior guard Cassandra McNeill (Philadelphia, PA) recorded ten points.
 
Gorczynski led the Griffins in the first half with ten of her 13 points coming in the opening period. She also recorded four assists, a block, and five steals by game's end. Alexander helped her out on both ends of the court, contributing five assists, a block, and three steals in addition to her second double-double of the season; 15 points and ten rebounds. Senior center Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) totaled ten points and nine rebounds while Stayrook and junior guard Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) combined for 27 points off the Griffin bench. Stayrook matched Alexander's effort to share the team lead in scoring.
 
The women's basketball team returns to the road on Tuesday, February 7, for a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest at Philadelphia University.
