Griffins Earn Fourth Straight CACC Win in Sorgenti

2/9/2012 11:58:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (2/9/2012) – Chestnut Hill College got out to a comfortable lead in the first half of this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest thanks to the careless play of Wilmington University. The Wildcats turned the ball over 28 times, 21 of them coming in the first half, allowing the Griffins to overcome a 43-34 rebounding deficit and a less efficient shooting performance (39.6%-30.9%) to capture a 54-42 victory.

The Wilmington University (1-18, 1-14) offense struggled mightily in the first half. The Wildcat turnovers began to pile up midway through the period (10:38), allowing Chestnut Hill College (6-16, 5-10) to turn a one-point lead, 12-11, into an 18-point halftime margin, 33-15. Fortunately for the Wildcats, the ball control (seven turnovers) improved in the second half brining them back within five, 38-33, halfway through the period (9:50). The Griffins quickly responded, crashing the boards and reestablishing their lead at 13, 48-35, at the six-minute mark (6:03). Sophomore guard Tianna Wagner (Newark, DE) had led the Wildcat charge by hitting three, three-point baskets in the final 12 minutes (12:09). The last Wagner three left the Wildcats down ten, 48-38, with 5:51 left to play, but it would be not enough to catch the Griffins, who used their clinching free throws to seal their fourth straight CACC home win.

Wagner finished with 15 points off the Wildcat bench. She hit all six of her shots (6-of-6, 100.0%) while also recording five rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Cari Callaway (Newark, DE) supplied the Wildcats with 12 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Candance Phrance (Crofton, MD) led the team in rebounds with 11. Freshman guard Candace DeShields (Baltimore, MD) totaled five assists.

The Griffins were truly a balanced unit as all 11 participants scored with only freshman guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, NJ) reaching double figures. She totaled ten points and made three of the Griffins 19 steals. Junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) was the workhorse on the glass and defense, hustling to 11 rebounds in addition to making three blocks and a steal. Senior center Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) collected six points, nine rebounds, and two steals.

The women's basketball team will visit Post University on Saturday, February 11, for their next CACC contest. Tip-off is schedule for 1:00 p.m.
