Griffins Come Close in Opener, But Lady Rams Claim CACC Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, PA – (3/23/2012) – Chestnut Hill College threatened to steal this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener against Philadelphia University with two fifth-inning runs, but a three-run Lady Ram lead withstood the Griffins rally for a 6-5 victory. The Lady Rams used the momentum to win the second contest a little easier, 9-0 in five innings. Freshman second baseman Brittany Hoban (Toms River, NJ) and freshman shortstop Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, MD) totaled two hits apiece in the doubleheader (2-for-6).
 
Behind a strong pitching performance from freshman Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, NJ), Philadelphia University (4-11, 2-2) secured the twin bill sweep with a 9-0, five inning, victory in game two. The Lady Rams opened the contest with four runs in the first inning, 4-0. They added two in the third inning thanks to two, one-out walks, and a two-run, two-out single from junior catcher Kacie DeMaio (Highland, NY), 6-0. A homerun for sophomore second baseman Samantha Lewis (Binghamton, NY) made it 7-0 Lady Rams in the fourth inning and with two more crossing the plate in the fifth, 9-0, they visitors were able to end the second game early. Abromavage allowed only three hits for the Griffins while striking out two in the win (1-5).
 
In the opener, Chestnut Hill College (0-6, 0-4) tied a 3-0 Lady Ram lead in the bottom of the third inning on two hits and two Lady Ram errors. Junior center fielder Kim Kashnoski (Philadelphia, PA) got aboard with a two-out, bunt single. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then scored on a Hoban double to center field, 3-1. A hit-batsman put two runners on and a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position, before walk to junior first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) loaded the bases. A fielder choice and a Lady Ram error allowed two more Griffins to cross to even the score, 3-3. The Lady Rams answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, 6-3, leaving the Griffins looking to rally. A Kashnoski walk led-off the fifth inning and after a Hoban double to right center a fielder's choice brought home the first run, 6-4. O'Neill scored the Griffins second run of the inning after a fly-out to left field, 6-5, but freshman pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, PA) closed the door for her third win of the season (3-3).
 
The softball team continues CACC at home tomorrow, Saturday, March 24, with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against Nyack College.
