Box Score 2 Philadelphia, PA – (3/26/2012) – The softball team earned their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory this afternoon, taking the second game of today's doubleheader with Nyack College in 3-2 walk-off fashion. Errors plagued the Griffins in the opener as the Warriors capitalized with a 7-1 win. Junior pitcher
Mandi Rush (Royersford, PA) recorded two hits in the twin bill, including the Griffins lone hit of the opener.
Six errors left Rush with no earned runs allowed in the first game of the doubleheader, but the fielding mishaps left Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 1-5) on the wrong end of a 7-1 final. Nyack College (1-17, 1-5) scored one run in the first inning, 1-0, and two runs in the third inning, 3-0, before the Griffins were able to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. A lead-off hit-batsman put one runner aboard and a two-out walk to junior right fielder
Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) gave the Griffins a chance to get on the scoreboard. The following error by the Warrior second baseman allowed the run to score and cut the deficit to 3-1. Unfortunately, the Griffins went quietly in the remaining at-bats while the Warrior plated four more runs en route to the 7-1 final. Rush recorded the Griffins lone hits with a single in the third inning. She took the loss (0-4) despite allowing no earned runs on nine hits and three walks. She struck out four.
The second contest was scoreless through the first four frames. The Warriors were first on the scoreboard with three hits scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs of their own, 2-2. Junior second baseman
Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) led-off the inning with a walk and after a double down the left field line from freshman right fielder
Brittany Hoban (Toms River, NJ) the Griffins had two runners in scoring position. A Warrior error allowed the first Griffin run to cross and the second run would come home on the next at-bat thanks to a single to center field from freshman shortstop
Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, MD). With the contest tied 2-2, Benson back to work on the mound in the top of the seventh. Despite a Griffin error she got out of the inning without allowing a run, setting the stage for the dramatic ending. Rush earned a lead-off walk, an error replaced her at first base with Benson, who helped herself earn the victory (1-2) by hustling around the diamond to score the game-winning run on Wilenta's double to the right field wall. Benson allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
The softball team continues CACC play with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Georgian Court University on Tuesday, March 27.
