Box Score 2 Lakewood, NJ – (3/27/2012) – Junior pitcher
Mandi Rush (Royersford, PA) kept Chestnut Hill College in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Georgian Court University. But a late offensive surge earned the Lions a 4-1 win in the opener, before carrying the momentum over to game two, where they completed the sweep with a 13-0 five-inning victory.
In today's first contest, pitching held the game close after each side scored a run in the first inning. Chestnut Hill College (1-9, 1-7) took advantage of their first at-bats with freshman shortstop
Brittany Hoban (Toms River, NJ) drawing a lead-off walk and scoring as junior first baseman
Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) cracked a one-out double to left center, 1-0. Georgian Court University (15-13, 4-4) got the run back in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out double to right center and some hustle on a two-out wild pitch, 1-1. The pitching took over after that, with Rush going pitch-for-pitch with the Lion freshman Megan Hull (Jackson, NJ). Unfortunately, the Lions offense was the first to support their pitcher. A one-out single in the sixth inning, followed by a two-out error by the Griffin second baseman, and a triple to right field from freshman left fielder Alyssa Paradiso (Atco, NJ) scored the first two runs of the frame for the Lions, 3-1, and they would get one more before taking care of the Griffins in their final at-bat. Rush took the loss (0-5) despite allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two.
The Lions learned something from Rush in the opener, and greeted her return to the mound in game two with 13 runs in the first three innings. They scored three times in the first inning, four in the second inning, and six in the third while all three of the Griffins hit came with two out in the second inning. Rush looked to help herself and spark the Griffins with a lead-off single to right field. Senior catcher
Gina DeAnnuntis (Hammonton, NJ) followed suit with her own hit to right field and junior second baseman
Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) made it three hits in a row with a single to center field, but the Griffins left the bases loaded on a watched third strike.
The softball team continues their CACC road trip with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Holy Family University on Friday, March 30.
