Box Score 2 Lantana, FL – (3/7/2012) – Competition continues to peak and valley at Florida Coast Spring Training, for Chestnut Hill College, who claimed a 8-7, 13-inning win over Post University today, after losing 12-4 to the University of the Sciences (USciences) in yesterday's contest. USciences held the Griffin to only three hits in their non-conference meeting, while a fourth hit for freshman right fielder
Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA) proved to be the game-winner against the Eagles.
McLaughlin singled to center field and scored in a three-run Chestnut Hill College (3-6) second inning, 3-0, then doubled to center field in a two-run fourth inning to help the Griffins post a 5-0 lead over Post University (3-7) early on. The Eagles narrowed the margin to one with two runs in the fifth, 5-2, and sixth innings, 5-4, thanks to timely hits from junior third baseman Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) and senior second baseman James Wong (Brooklyn, NY). The Griffins responded, plating a run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded beam-ball, 6-4, and another on an eighth-inning double from sophomore designated hitter
Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA), 7-4. Unfortunately, the Griffins cushion shrunk once again with the Eagles scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth inning, 7-6, before tying in the ninth inning with a run-scoring double from freshman first baseman Erik Rodriguez (Miami, FL), 7-7. The contest would remain knotted until the top of the 13
th, when McLaughlin delivered the eventual game-winning run. Sophomore center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA) reached with one out as a hit-batsman; he stole second base, and advanced to third base on the resulting overthrow, to place himself 90 feet away from home. McLaughlin then rewarded Lites for his hard work, scoring him with his fourth hit on the game, 8-7. In addition to McLaughlin, senior left fielder
Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA), junior shortstop
Joe Crane (Newtown, PA), and Puskar recorded multiple-hit performances. Freshman pitcher
Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, PA) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in his five-inning start, but freshman pitcher
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ) collected his first collegiate win (1-0) in relief.
Senior second baseman
Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) recorded two of the Griffins hits in the loss to USciences on Tuesday, March 6. Sophomore catcher
Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA) recorded the other hit, platting two of the Griffins four runs against the Devils with a first-inning single. Senior pitcher
John Flack (Upper Holland, PA) made the start; allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman pitcher
Dane Gahr (Brick, NJ) took the loss (0-1).
The baseball team will challenge two more Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) members in non-conference games at Florida Coast Spring Training. The Griffins open tomorrow, Thursday, March 8, with a 12:00 p.m. contest against Felician College and they will close the day with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Bloomfield College.
