Box Score 2 Lantana, FL – (3/8/2012) – Chestnut Hill College grabbed two big wins this evening, battling the weather and a couple of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rivals to non-conference victories. The Griffins opened the afternoon with an 11-4 win over Felician College before concluding the day's competition with a 9-8, 11-inning win over Bloomfield College in the nightcap.
Felician College (4-10) was first on the scoreboard with a triple and a single to leading off the bottom of the first inning, 1-0. The score remained that way until Chestnut Hill College (5-6) scored twice in the top of the third inning; senior left fielder
Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) drew a lead-off walk and freshman third baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ) followed with a single through the right side. A single from senior second baseman
Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) loaded the bases and a walk to sophomore designated hitter
Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA) brought home the first run, 1-1. A fielder's choice off the bat of junior shortstop
Joe Crane (Newtown, PA) plated the second run and gave the Griffins the lead, 2-1. A long fourth inning left the score at 4-4; the Griffins scoring two runs on a Latchum homerun and the Golden Falcons answering with a two-run double from senior second baseman Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ) and a foul-ball sacrifice fly from senior center fielder Casey Phillips (Englewood, FL). The stalemate did not last long, however, as freshman right fielder
Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA) stole home on a daring effort in the sixth inning, 5-4, and six more Griffin runs followed in over the next two frames, 11-4.
Daywalt led the Griffins with four hits (4-of-5). McLaughlin and junior catcher
Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, PA) each recorded two hits; DiMonte also totaled two runs-batted-in (RBI). In a complete-game effort, sophomore pitcher
Jim Goodwin Jr. (Delran, NJ) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out three.
The baseball team concludes play ay Florida Coast Spring Training with a 9:30 a.m. doubleheader against Mercy College tomorrow, Friday, March 9.
