Cougars Overcome Cavallo’s Clout For CACC Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, PA – (4/10/2012) – Chestnut Hill College returned to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play today with an afternoon home doubleheader against Caldwell College. Junior first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) continued her torrid hitting, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and three runs-batted-in (RBI); but the Cougars ended the first game in five innings, 9-1 (5), before completing the sweep with a 9-4 win in game two.
 
Caldwell College (27-8, 15-1) got the jump on Chestnut Hill College (1-21, 1-15), scoring eight runs in their first at-bat, 8-0. The Griffins answered in the bottom of the third inning, unfortunately, Cavallo's second homerun of the season was only a solo shot, 8-1. The Cougars added their ninth run in the top of the fifth inning on a one-out double down the left field line from junior second baseman Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA), 9-1, while freshman pitcher Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA) held the Griffins scoreless in the bottom of the frame to end the affair.
 
In game two, the first inning was full of action as the Cougars plated four runs in their at-bat before Cavallo connected for another homerun in the Griffin half of the inning, this one brought home two runs, 4-2. The Cougars extended their lead with three runs in the fourth inning, 7-2, and two runs in the fifth inning, 9-2, before the Griffins scored two runs in their final at-bat. Cavallo led off the inning with a walk and a ground rule double from junior second baseman Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) put two Griffins in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from junior pitcher Mandi Rush (Royersford, PA) made it 9-3 and a grounder to the second baseman off the bat of sophomore left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Spring, FL) gave the Griffins one more run, 9-4, before their outs expired.
 
The softball team continues CACC play at home with Bloomfield College on Saturday, April 14. First pitch is schedule for 12:00 p.m.
