Devils Own Demise, Griffins Win Non-Conference Clash

4/11/2012 12:52:00 AM

Box Score Norristown, PA – (4/10/2012) – Chestnut Hill College's patience was the Devils undoing as the Griffins drew 12 walks and six hit-batsmen in a 14-6 non-conference win over the University of the Sciences. Freshman right fielder Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA) and senior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) each recorded two hits and three runs while six-man effort accounted for the Griffins pitching performance.

USciences (7-14) scored one run in the top of the first inning, but after three errors, three walks, two hit batsman, and three hits Chestnut Hill College (17-14) scored eight runs in the bottom of the frame, 8-1. The Devils changed pitchers in the second inning, but two more walks, two more hit batsmen, a single, and a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Joe Crane (Newtown, PA) pushed the Griffins out to a 10-1 advantage. Crane singled in a run in the third inning, 11-1, and in the fifth inning a one-out McLaughlin single would score the another run, 12-1, before two walks and a two–run, pinch-hit, double from freshman Anthony McQuade (Lidenhurst, NY) made it 14-1, Griffins. The Devils scored four runs on four hits in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 14-5 and they made it 14-6 with another run in the ninth inning, but it would be too late to atone for their early game pitching woes. Sophomore pitcher Jim Goodwin Jr. (Delran, NJ) earned the win (3-0) for the Griffin pitching staff, while freshmen pitchers Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, PA) and Dane Gahr (Philadelphia, PA) each offered two innings of scoreless relief.

The baseball team remains home tomorrow, Wednesday, April 11, to host Concordia College (NY) in a 3:00 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.
