Box Score 2 Philadelphia, PA – (4/14/2012) – Last inning heroics and some hustle bought Chestnut Hill College their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season, as freshman shortstop
Brittany Hoban (Toms River, NJ) hustled home on a throwing error by the Bloomfield College second baseman to score the winning run in game two, 9-8. The Deacons controlled the opener to an 8-0, five-inning final. Sophomore left fielder
Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Spring, FL) headlined the lineup's production in the second contest with a three-hit performance.
After two innings in game two, Bloomfield College (24-5, 9-7) and Chestnut Hill College (2-22, 2-16) sat tied at 1-1, the Griffins scoring in the first inning on a passed ball and the Deacons evening the score in the second inning on a two-out single to center field. The Deacons did much more damage in the fourth inning, platting seven runs on seven hits and an error to post an intimidating 8-1 lead. Determined, the Griffins chipped away at the deficit with a run in the fifth inning, as freshman center fielder
Brittany Neuman (Goffstown, NH) led off the inning with a single, before a walk to junior right fielder
Kim Kashnoski (Philadelphia, PA) and a Mattaliano single loaded the bags. A walk to freshman third baseman
Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, MD) would bring home Neumann, 8-2. The Griffins erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to bring all things even, 8-8, heading to the final fame. Neumann drew a one-out walk and Kashnoski reached on a bunt, which allowed a fielder's choice to second base and a throwing error to propel Neumann home for the winning run, 9-8. Mattaliano was 3-for-3 and scored twice, while Cavallo, Neumann, and Kashnoski recorded two hits apiece. Junior pitcher
Mandi Rush (Royersford, PA) earned her first win of the season (1-12) and scored a run in the Griffin sixth inning.
The Deacons used early offense and strong pitching to control the afternoon's first game. They scored four runs in the first inning, 4-0, one in the fourth, 5-0, and three in the fifth, 8-0, to end the contest early. O'Neill, junior second baseman
Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA), and junior second baseman
Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) were the only Griffins reach base, each recording a single.
The softball team continues CACC play tomorrow, Sunday, April 15, at Felician College with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
