Warrior Bats Add to Griffins CACC Woes

4/15/2012 9:42:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pomona, NY – (4/14/2012) – In this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Nyack College, the Warrior bats outslugged those of Chestnut Hill College to claim wins of 8-7 and 7-5 over the Griffins. After trailing 7-4, the Griffins tied the opener with a three-run seventh inning, 7-7, only to let the Warriors win the affair on a two-out, eighth-inning double. The nightcap went back-and-forth as well, this time the Griffins held a 4-3 third-inning lead  before the Warriors stole the show with a base-clearing, two-out triple in their half of the frame and a late insurance run on a Griffin wild pitch, 7-5.

Chestnut Hill College (17-18, 4-10) trailed 7-4 after the fifth inning of the opener, as Nyack College (17-15, 7-5) created their advantage with five runs in the third inning, 5-1, one in the fourth, 6-4, and one more in the fifth. Following a scoreless sixth inning, sophomore designated hitter Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA) led off the Griffins half of the seventh inning with a single, sophomore first baseman Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA) did the same, and with an error by the Warrior third baseman the Griffins loaded the bases with no outs. As a result, a one-out single from sophomore center fielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA) scored two, 7-6, before a single from  senior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) would knot that game at 7-7. Unfortunately, the Warriors would record two, two-out hits in their eighth inning at-bat to plate the winning run, 8-7. Puskar, Mullin, and Lites recorded two hits apiece, while junior shortstop Joe Crane (Newtown, PA) knocked in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance.

The Warriors used the momentum to score three runs in their first at-bat of game two, 3-0. The Griffins got two runs back in the second inning thanks to a Mullin lead-off double, a hit batsman, a walk, a run-scoring passed ball, and a Daywalt sacrifice fly, 3-2. The Griffins would take the lead in the third inning, tying it first on a no-out fielder's choice, 3-3, and then forging ahead on a two-out Crane double, 4-3. However, the Griffins were again outdone by the Warriors as the home side used a two-out third-inning triple to gain a 6-4 and a fifth-inning wild pitch to collect the 7-5 victory. Freshman third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ) went 2-for-5 with two runs-batted-in (RBI) to lead the Griffins.

The baseball team breaks from CACC play for another non-conference battle with local rival, the University of the Sciences (USciences). USciences will serve as the home team for the affair, but due to poor field conditions the 6:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, April 18, will be played at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.
