Box Score 2 Philadelphia, PA – (4/25/2012) – Chestnut Hill College was eliminated from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) postseason play with the outcome of today's league doubleheader. The University of the Sciences (USciences) earned a ten-inning win in the opener with a walk-off base-on-balls, 7-6, before completing the sweep with a 10-4 win in game two. Junior shortstop
Joe Crane (Newtown, PA) led the Griffins, going 4-for-6 on the afternoon with two runs-batted-in (RBI) in game one.
USciences (12-19, 8-10) scored three runs in their first at-bat of the twin bill to lead early in game one, 3-0. The Devils lead held until the top of the seventh inning, when Chestnut Hill College (19-21, 5-13) brought home three runs on three hits. Sophomore first baseman
Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA) connected for a one-out single to the Devil shortstop. He stole second and then reached home seconds later on the first collegiate homerun for freshman third baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ), 3-2. Steen scored two batters later, on a homerun to right center field from senior center fielder
Andrew Koziol (Wilmington, DE), 3-3. The Devils answered in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-3, before another three-run at-bat gave the Griffins a 6-4 lead after the top of the eighth inning. Two runs went back the Devils way in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-out single from freshman right fielder Will Rebman (Cape Coral, FL), tying the contest at 6-6. The ninth inning went by scoreless, but the Griffins got into trouble in the tenth inning with a lead-off double to junior first baseman John McMahon (Millville, NJ), an intentional walk to junior shortstop Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley, PA), a one-out wild pitch, an two base-on-balls. The result was a 7-6 walk-off win for the Devils. Crane and Puskar each recorded two hits for the Griffins.
The Devils pitching was a gift and a curse in game two as senior pitcher Luke Peyton (Haddonfield, NJ) walked 11 Griffins without allowing a hit over three innings. The Griffins used the free base runners to their advantage and owned a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth inning. Each side would score twice in the frame, 4-3, but the Devils tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off triple and a one-out Davis grounder to the Griffins shortstop, 4-4, before erupting for six runs in the sixth inning, 10-4. That spread would hold until the contest's conclusion thanks to the relief effort of Devil sophomore John McConville (New Windsor, NY), who earned the win (1-0) by holding the Griffins scoreless over the final six innings of the game. Crane, Koziol, and senior catcher
Jordan McComb (Hillsdale, NY) were responsible for the Griffins three hits.
The baseball team concludes their season with a 12:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Felician College on Saturday, April 28. The Chestnut Hill College Athletic Department will recognize their graduating class; Koziol, McComb, outfielders
