Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Spring, FL) recorded two hits in game one for the Griffins and knocked in their only run of game two.
Mattaliano recorded a one-out single in the top of the first inning to give Chestnut Hill College (1-15, 1-13) a runner in their first at-bat of the afternoon. She was not on-base long, as junior first baseman
Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) doubled her home with a with a strike to center field, 1-0. USciences (11-13, 9-7) answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs on a pair of two-out singles and a couple Griffin throwing errors, 2-1, before erupting for six runs on seven hits and an error in the second inning, 8-1. The Griffins looked to get back into the fray in the third inning with freshman shortstop
Brittany Hoban (Toms River, NJ) bringing home junior right fielder
Kim Kashnoski (Philadelphia, PA) with a single to center field, 8-2, but the Griffins could muster no more while the Devils plated their last run with a one-out grounder to first base, 9-2. Mattaliano and Kashnoski led the Griffins with two hits apiece while Cavallo and Hoban recorded the runs-batted-in (RBI).
The Devils went back on the offensive early in game two, scoring a run in their first at-bat with a lead-off triple and a single to center field, 1-0. They added seven runs on seven hits in the second inning, 8-0, and five runs on four hits and two Griffin errors in the fourth inning, 13-0, before the Griffins broke the shutout with a fifth-inning tally. Gina DeAnnuntis (Hammonton, NJ) recorded a one-out single to left field and freshman right fielder
Brittany Neuman (Goffstown, NH) followed with a drive to pas the Devil third baseman. A walk to Hoban loaded the bases for Mattaliano, who would bring home one Griffin with a fielder's choice, 13-1, before the Devils recorded the afternoon's final out with a swing and a miss.
The softball team breaks from CACC play tomorrow, Friday, April 6, to visit Mercy College for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
