Mavericks Mute Griffin Bats In Afternoon Doubleheader

4/6/2012 6:25:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dobbs Ferry, NY – (4/6/2012) – The Chestnut Hill College softball team suffered a pair of losses at Mercy College this afternoon, losing 8-0 in a five-inning, no-hitter in the opener and 18-1 in a five-inning game two. The Mavericks needed little offense in the first game as Mavericks sophomore pitcher Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, CT) allowed only two Griffin base runners. The Griffins scored first in game two, but the Mavericks carried the momentum from the opener into the later affair where they totaled 18 runs on 18 hits and two errors in their first three at-bats.

Sophomore left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Spring, FL) led off the second game of the day with a walk. She moved to second to give Chestnut Hill College (1-17) an early scoring opportunity. Junior first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) delivered Mattaliano home and gave the Griffins their first lead of the afternoon, 1-0. Unfortunately, the Mavericks were still energized from the game-one no-hitter. They scored five runs in their half of the first inning, 5-1, eight in the second, 13-1, and five more in the third to hold a commanding 18-1 lead which they carried to contest's conclusion. Cavallo recorded two hits in the contest.

Mattaliano walked with one out in the first inning of the opener and Neuman reached third base after getting aboard on an error by the Maverick first baseman, but the Griffins never scored or recorded a hit in the opener as Puglisi struck out nine in her no-hitter performance. The Maverick offense picked up in the third inning, scoring five runs on six hits, before adding two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning to end the game early. Sophomore fits baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, NY) recorded a solo homerun in the Maverick fourth.

The softball team returns home to host St. Thomas Aquinas College in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, April 9.
