Women’s Volleyball Splits Second Day At Rollins College Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winter Park, Fla. – (9/1/2012) – Freshman outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) and sophomore setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) emerged as stars for Chestnut Hill College, as the Griffins first defeated Kentucky State University (KSU) 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) before falling in a tight-played match to Pace University, 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 27-25, 18-25, 12-15). Gruver finished the day with 21 kills, six aces, and 27 digs, which included her first collegiate double-double. Tamsing directed the Griffins past the Thorobreds with 25 assists before recording her own double-double in the match versus the Setters, 34 assists and 14 digs.
 
Chestnut Hill College (1-3) started the second day of competition at the Rollins College Invitational strong, atoning for yesterday's losses with an opening 3-0 victory over KSU (0-3). In the first set, the Griffins rushed out to a 22-9 advantage, before the Thorobreds could slow their momentum on a 25-12 final. The Thorobreds kept the second set closer, pulling even at 8-8, before Gruver, Tamsing, and freshman defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) sparked the Griffins for a 25-16 win. The third set went much like the first with the Griffins running out to a 19-9 lead before closing frame on a 25-13 edge with a .400 (13K-3E-25TA) team hitting percentage. Gruver led the Griffins with ten kills and nine digs. Tamsing provided 25 assists, an ace, and four digs, while Bianchini spotted three aces and hustled to seven digs. Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) contributed five kills, two aces, 13 digs, and a block to the triumph.
 
Play against Pace University (2-2) was much more intense. The Griffins opened with a 8-2 lead over the Setters, who responded by tying the opening set at 18-18 before Bianchini's service ignited the Griffins for a finishing run, 25-22. The Setter returned the favor in the second set, controlling a 13-6 advantage before being slowed to a 25-17 win. A tighter third set saw the Griffins own a 12-9 lead on Gruver aces and DePalma kills, before a Setter rally brought the score to 13-12. The battle endured to a 27-25 final with Gruver and Tamsing providing the Griffins delivering the finishing blows. Unfortunately, the Setter refocused in the fourth set, forcing a deciding set with a 25-18 win. The Griffins held an 8-5 advantage in the final set, but the Setters forced a timeout at 9-9, before senior middle blocker Tamilee Webb (Hartsdale, N.Y.) carried them to a 15-12 set, 3-2 match, victory. DePalma, Gruver, and junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) recorded 11 kills apiece. DePalma also collected ten digs and a block, Gruver additionally totaled five aces and 18 digs to complete her double-double, and Markowski highlighted the Griffin defensive effort with five blocks and a dig. Tamsing finished with 34 assists and 13 digs, while Bianchini contributed two aces and 14 digs in the loss.
 
The women's volleyball team returns home to host West Chester University in a 7:30 p.m. match on Tuesday, September 4.
