Defense Dominates Meeting of Local CACC Rivals

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/25/2012) – In a defensive battle, both Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia University recorded eight blocks and at least 40 digs. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams were more successful on the offensive end as they defeated the Griffins 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. Sophomore right side Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) led the Griffins with 11 kills and three blocks.
 
Chestnut Hill College (6-9, 2-2) held an early edge over Philadelphia University (8-3, 4-0), 5-3, who responded with a 9-2 run and an eventual 25-19 win in the opening set. The Lady Rams led nearly the whole way in the second set, pacing the Griffins to a 25-17 win. The third set went similar to the second, with the Lady Rams gradually separating for a 25-19 win.
 
The Lady Rams were led by junior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill.) and freshman middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y.) who combined to score 27.5 points. Olson benefitted most from the Lady Rams two-setter attack, scoring 13 kills in addition to a team-high 14 digs. Hughes finished with ten kills and a team-high six blocks. Junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa.) and freshman setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla.) shared the distributing duties with 15 and 13 assists, respectively.
 
Schock gave her first double-digit kill performance of the season, providing her 11 kills on a team-leading .474 (11K-2E-19TA) hitting percentage. Schock also pitched in on a strong team defensive effort with three blocks. Freshman libero Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) anchored the defense with 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) was a factor on both sides of the net with seven kills and ten digs, while freshman setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) directed the Griffin offense with 26 assists.
 
The women's volleyball team returns home to continue their CACC schedule on Friday, September 28, with a 5:00 p.m. match against the University of the Sciences.
