Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/6/2012) – Chestnut Hill College dictated play during today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season opener at Philadelphia University. The Griffins took a 2-1 lead into singles action were they swept individual play to earn an 8-1 conference win.
Wins at number one and number three doubles put Chestnut Hill College (2-0, 1-0) on the right path to victory. Senior
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Belarus, Minsk) and junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) led off with an 8-1 win at number one doubles. The match was immediately knotted by Philadelphia University (2-1, 0-1), who took number two doubles 8-5 on play of freshman Kaylee Fennern (Idaho Falls, Idaho) and junior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md.). Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) who conquered number three doubles 8-4.
Senior
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) kept the momentum going for the Griffins, earning the first win of singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number three singles. At number one singles, Dennis followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Sophomore
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) then took number four singles 6-2, 6-1. Williams-Mulesa endured to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number five singles, before Shcherbakova chimed in with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number two singles. Owens won number six singles to complete the match 6-4, 7-5.
The women's tennis team continues their CACC schedule tomorrow, Friday, September 7, at Caldwell College with an 11:00 a.m. match.
