Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (10/5/2013) – Freshman goalkeeper
James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) made the necessary stops early, the offense scored the necessary goals at the start of the second half, and the defense took care of the rest as the Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team made it five straight victories via shutout with today's 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) triumph over Caldwell College. Just after the halftime break, junior forward
Channing Couillard (Jacksonville, Fla.) sent senior midfielder
Hernan Angulo (Lima, Peru) one-on-one with the Cougar keeper for the first Griffin goal, the second came only minutes later when an aggressive, junior forward,
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) stripped the Cougar defense and lobbed a ball to the scoring foot of senior forward
Robert Stocklin (Haddonfield, N.J.).
Shots were even at the midway point, but Caldwell College (4-6, 2-4) put the early pressure on Chestnut Hill College (5-3-2, 4-1-1) and Jackson, in particular. The Griffin keeper denied seven of the Cougars ten first-half attempts, but his strikers went scoreless as well leaving the CACC rivals to a 0-0 tie at intermission. After the halftime break, it was the Griffins who controlled the ball. On an early offensive progression, Couillard carried the ball through the midfield before sending Angulo on a scoring strike at 47:35, 1-0. On their very next shot, just less than three minutes later, a feisty Amaya stripped a Cougar defender and located Stocklin for another Griffin goal at 50:25, 2-0. From there, the Griffins kept the Cougars on their heels, limiting them to three shots in the period, and earning their fourth CACC shutout victory.
Freshman midfielder Nicolas Prieto (Newark, N.J.) and junior defenseman Steve Petrosino (Toms River, N.J.) led the Cougar offense with three shots apiece while sophomore goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, N.J.) recorded eight saves in the loss (4-6).
Angulo and Amaya topped the Griffin attacks with four apiece. Freshman defenseman
Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) took three shots while controlling the middle of the pitch and Jackson made seven first-half saves, eight in all, before handing the contest over to his defense. He earned his fifth win (5-2-2) of the season, all coming in shutout fashion.
The men's soccer team breaks from CACC play for a trip to Lock Haven University on Tuesday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
