Women’s Soccer Score Arrives Too Late Against Lady Rams

10/9/2013 12:50:00 AM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (10/8/2013) – Chestnut Hill College's midseason home stand came to an end with tonight's 4-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss to Philadelphia University. The Griffins fought valiantly against a 4-1 halftime deficit, but broke the Lady Rams defense too little, too late in a 4-2 final. With the Griffins first goal coming courtesy of a Lady Ram own goal, senior forward Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, N.J.) was the only Griffin to score in the affair, doing so off a serve from senior midfielder Marykate McShane (Lebanon, Pa.) in the 82nd-minute.

Philadelphia University (2-5-1, 2-3-1) gave meaning to their early momentum when freshmen, midfielder Morgan Graus (Rochester, N.Y.) and forward Shannon Reardigan (Glassboro, N.J.) matriculated the ball up the pitch and out to the wing for an accurate serve to the awaiting foot of senior forward Kristen Ferguson (Haddonfield, N.J.) for a 1-0 advantage at 17:13. Eager to even the score, Chestnut Hill College (2-5-1, 2-2-1) assaulted the Lady Ram goal and complicated the goal box enough for a ricochet ball to find the back of the net and even the score at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams quickly melted any momentum the Griffins wished to yield from the misplay with goals in the 33rd, 41st, and 42nd minutes. The home side gave the visitors once last go in the final ten minutes. The result would be DiGiovanni's sixth goal of the year, which came off a perfectly played McShane serve at 81:04, but that would not be enough for the Griffins to catch their Philadelphia neighbors in tonight's CACC contest.

Freshman forward Andrea Neski (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) led a balanced Lady Ram offense with four shots and the go-ahead goal at 32:51. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa.) made six saves in the win (2-5-1).

DiGiovanni fired five shots and was supported on the Griffin attack early by senior defender Lauren Nolte (Wilmington, Del.) and late by McShane several others who joined in the Griffins 11-7 second-half shooting edge. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) totaled 11 saves and got help on another in the loss (2-7-1).

The women's soccer team continues their CACC schedule at Concordia College (NY) on Saturday, October 12, with a 12:00 p.m. contest.
