Griffins Halt to Hawks in First Fray Of Northeast-10 Challenge

Box Score Albany, N.Y. – (11/16/2013) – Chestnut Hill College took the court for the first time at this weekend's Northeast-10 Challenge with tonight's contest versus Saint Anselm College. After a series of early turnovers, the Griffins were left chasing the Hawks all the way to the final horn, 113-73. The Griffin effort was fueled by the backcourt play of senior guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior guard Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.), who combined for 30 points and nine assists in the affair.
 
Saint Anselm College (1-1) took advantage of some early Chestnut Hill College (1-3) miscues to establish a 14-point edge, 19-5, in the opening five minutes (14:52). The margin reached 20 points, 37-17, on a three-point basket from senior guard John Nielsen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) just before the eight-minute mark (8:06). Nielsen actually connected on 5-of-6 (83.3%) first-half three pointers to help junior guard Roy Mabrey (Belmar, N.J.) keep the Hawks comfortably ahead for halftime, 56-34. After intermission, it only got worse for the Griffins, who quickly lost ground in a 28-12 run that extended their Hawks advantage to 38 points, 84-46, with a little less than 12 minutes remaining (11:52). Bogans and Walck got some help from graduate guard Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.), who scored ten in the period, but was not enough of a difference maker in the eventual 40-point win.
 
Mabrey lead all participants with 28 points on 10-of-14 (.714) shooting effort and a 5-of-7 (.714) performance from the charity stripe; he was 3-of-3 (1.000) from long range and additionally offered four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Neilsen was even more effective than Mabrey with 25 points on a 7-of-8 (.875) showing from three-point territory and a perfect 4-of-4 (1.000) free throw contribution. Two other Hawks finished in double figures; sophomore forward Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) providing 12 points and freshman forward Isaiah Nelson (North Andover, Mass.) supplying 11 points, while senior guard Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.) organizing the Hawk offense with 12 assists, eight points, and three steals.
 
Bogans was 6-of-7 (.857) from the floor and 7-of-7 (1.000) from the free throw line in his early season-high scoring performance. He also provided four assists opposite five helpers from Walck, who went for 11 points. Double-digit scoring efforts were also provided by Trevisan, who totaled 11 points, and senior center Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.), who finished with 12 points after an eight-point opening period.

The men's basketball team will conclude their participation in the Northeast-10 Challenge tomorrow, Sunday, November 17, when they face the host, the College of St. Rose, in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
