Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) and junior forward
Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) impressed an enthusiastic home crowd and inspired Chestnut Hill College to a 68-62 victory over Bloomsburg University in tonight's season opener. The Griffins took the early advantage and eventually had to rally for a 32-27 halftime lead before putting the Huskies away in the second half.
Between Trevisan, Sekulic and sophomore forward
Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.), the Huskies were left chasing the Griffins through a majority of the first half. Chestnut Hill College (1-0) defended the opening tip-off and hustled out to a 7-0 (16:35) lead before Bloomsburg University (0-1) could catch their breath. The tide turned when sophomore guard Wes Lyons (Millville, Pa.) and senior guard Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport, Pa.) energized the visitor effort with a three-minute stretch that wore on Griffins and ended with the Huskies taking the lead on a three pointer from senior guard Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown, Pa.), 19-17 (7:06). The Huskies lead would equal the Griffins initial edge, 27-20 (4:06), before the Griffins greenhorns, Trevisan and Sekulic, inspired the home team to a 12-0 closing run, 32-27.
The Griffins held onto their advantage for the first five minutes of the second half and allowed the contest to tie only once, 39-39 (14:57), before pacing the Huskies to a six-point victory. With a couple slick moves, some defense, and the first of two big three-point baskets Sekulic separated the Griffins for a game-high ten-point lead, 53-43, at 8:25. The Huskies continued to nip as the Griffins heals down the stretch, but Trevisan kept the home team on the right path and scored 11 points in the final five minutes to ensure the Griffins a happy home opener.
Lyons finished with ten points and five rebounds off the Husky bench, but Christmas brought 19 points and four rebounds while Jordan offered 17 points, six rebounds, a block and two steals as the main cogs of the visitor's game plan. Junior guard John Riles (Philadelphia, Pa.) contributed a balanced performance five points, two rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
