Bench Runs Lady Rams Past Griffins

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (12/4/2013) – Junior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) directed Chestnut Hill College to an early 7-4 advantage, but the Griffins would have no answer for junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa.), who came off the Philadelphia University bench to lead the Lady Rams to a 65-53 Central Atlantic Collegiate (CACC) win. Jacobs' mid-first half contribution allowed the Lady Rams to establish a 32-17 halftime advantage and hold off the Griffins in an eight-point victory.
 
Jacobs scored five straight points midway through the first half to help Philadelphia University (4-3, 2-0) generate a 13-7 lead with 10:43 remaining in the period. After a brief Chestnut Hill College (1-5, 0-2) rally, sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa.) took charge of the Lady Ram effort that extended the home team's advantage to 15 points by halftime. In the second half, the Lady Rams would grow their lead to as many as 22 points, 58-36, with 9:25 left to play in the affair. Behind senior forward Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, N.J.), the Griffins managed to cut the Lady Ram advantage to 12 points, 58-46, before the final five minutes of play (5:38). Unfortunately, they would get no further as Jacobs kept the Lady Rams rolling to an eight-point win, 65-53.
 
Jacobs totaled 17 points and Newell finished the evening with eight points, ten rebounds, and three steals, to account for a majority of the Lady Rams 29 bench points. From the starting unit, the Lady Rams received double-double efforts from sophomore guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.). Young recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and a steal, while Arnao supplied ten points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
 
Farrow and junior guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) each totaled 11 points as the Griffins top producers. Farrow added seven rebounds, a block, and a steal to her double-digit scoring effort, while Gorczynski hit three from long range (3-of-4, .750) in addition to recording three rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal. Senior center Aimee Bouie (New Castle, Del.) led the Griffins bench production with five points, five rebounds, and four blocks.
 
The women's basketball team plays their next CACC contest at Bloomfield College on Saturday, December 7. Tip-off is schedule for 1:00 p.m.
