Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/23/2013) – Sophomore forward Garret Kerr (Moorestown, N.J.) dominated play with 26 points and 22 rebounds, keeping the University of the Sciences (USciences) just out of reach of Chestnut Hill College, 63-57, in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The Griffins forced the Devils into 15 turnovers, but with a 44-30 rebounding edge and a slightly better shooting effort, 36.5%-33.9% field goals and 73.3%-60.0% free throws, the Devils overcame a second-half home surge for victory.
Always a tight affair, Chestnut Hill College (12-13, 8-8) snared a 7-0 lead in the opening two minutes (18:25) only for USciences (13-12, 10-7) to even the contest at 11-11 (12:13), before building a ten-point lead with 4:12 remaining in the first half. Fortunately, the Griffins took advantage of a brief Devil shooting skid to cut the margin to six points, 29-23, heading to intermission. After the break, the relentless effort of Kerr wore on the Griffins, yet it did not dissuade them. An energetic shift from freshman forward
Jordan McDaniel (Colonia, N.J.) ignited the Griffins for a 10-1 run that left the home team up 40-39 at the nine-minute mark (9:00). The Griffins controlled the advantage for the next four minutes, but the Devils never wandered and rallied after a Griffins technical to tie the contest at 49-49 (4:34), before claiming a 63-57 win.
Kerr's totals mounted in the second half, as he hit 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the floor and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line while corralling 12 rebounds in the closing frame. He added three assists, a block, and a steal to his dominate double-double effort. Freshman guard Shofolarin DeSilva (Moorestown, N.J.) offered 15 points as the Devils secondary scoring threat.
Senior guard
Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) topped the Griffin box score with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. He was complimented by a seven-point, eight-rebound effort from freshman forward
Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.), that also included two assists, a block, and two steals.
Prior to this evening's contest the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics recognized DiRugeris, senior guard
Francis Ashe (Hyattsville, Md.) and manager Christina Csicsek in their final home contest. The men's basketball team will conclude the 2012-2013 regular season on Tuesday, February 26, with a 8:00 p.m. CACC contest at Philadelphia University.
