Men’s Tennis Proves Greater than Gyrenes, Women Fall to #26 University of Tampa

Tampa, Fla. – (2/25/2013) – Chestnut Hill College Tennis went 1-1 in today's action in Tampa, Florida, as men's team earned an 8-0 victory over Ave Maria University at the Tampa Tennis Center while the women fell at the #26 University of Tampa, 7-2. The Griffins took advantage of a short-handed Gyrenes roster, claiming the top three singles matches after winning two doubles matches by default. At the University of Tampa, the Spartans swept doubles play before taking four if six singles matches from the Griffins.
 
The Chestnut Hill College (12-6) women broke up the University of Tampa (6-2) shutout with singles wins in the number one and number four individual flights. Senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) won number one singles 6-4, 10-1 after dropping the opening set to sophomore Meg Wladimirski (Sao Paolo, Brazil), 6-3. Sophomore Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) earned the Griffins other singles point at number four singles, recovering from a 7-6 (7-3) setback to defeat sophomore Chloe Pereira (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) 7-6 (7-0), 10-5. Unfortunately, the Spartans defeated the Griffins in the remaining individual matches to facilitate their 7-2 victory.
 
The men's tennis team came away with a victory at the Tampa Tennis Center as they won the top three singles matches from the Gyrenes after taking five points by default. Junior Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and sophomore Steven Say (Cannes, France) were unable to finish their number one doubles match, but the Griffins won number two and number three doubles by default to take a 2-0 to singles play. In singles action, sophomore Michael Humes (Medford, N.J.) won number one singles 8-5, Pham took the second individual flight 8-0, and Say claimed number three singles 8-1 to lead Chestnut Hill College (4-3) to their first spring win, 8-0.
 
The men's and women's tennis teams continue their spring trip tomorrow, Tuesday, February 26, with a 3:00 p.m. match at Eckerd College.
