The first three innings of the opener went swiftly with East Stroudsburg University (4-4) scoring the contest's first run in the top of the third inning, 1-0. The Warriors blew the contest open in the top of the fourth inning when they scored seven runs on six hits and another Chestnut Hill College (3-3) miscue, 8-0. The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back-to-back, one-out, doubles from freshman second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), Mattaliano, and Faillace facilitating two runs, 8-2. Unfortunately, the Warriors plated four more runs in their next at-bat to win the game in five innings, 12-2.
The Griffins fell behind the eight ball in game two, as the Warriors built a 5-0 advantage with two runs in the first inning, 2-0, one in the second, 3-0, and two more in the fourth. The home team's response came in the bottom of that frame with Heaton reaching on an error and moving third base on a Faillace double to left field, before scoring on a ground out to second base, 5-1. Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton, Pa.), a Mattaliano single brought home the second Griffin run of the inning. Unfortunately, the rally was instantly halted on a line-out double play, 5-2. Both sides went scoreless in the fifth inning, leaving the Warriors to score three runs in the sixth inning and reinsure their advantage at 8-3 before securing a 9-4 win.
The softball team travels to Millersville University for their next doubleheader. The twin bill is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. opening pitch on Wednesday, March 13.
