Box Score Orangeburg, N.Y. – (3/2/2013) – Despite a 30-point performance from senior guard
Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.), S#4 Chestnut Hill College could not catch N#1 Dominican College who advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinal Round with a 91-85 victory. The Chargers were led by four players who finished in double figures, most notably sophomore forward Nick Smith (Middletown, N.Y.) who came off the bench to lead the group with 18 points. Sophomore guard
Luke Dickson (Pitman, N.J.) was DiRugeris' compliment with 19 points off the Griffin bench.
Dominican College (22-5) controlled the early goings, but they could not endure the Dickson, who drained two three-pointers and a jumper amidst a 10-4 run that put Chestnut Hill College (12-15) up one point, 20-19, with 10:41 remaining in the first half. Dickson's play was answered by Chargers senior guard Leon Porter (Laurel, Md.) until a DiRugeris three-point basket extended the Griffin advantage to four points, 27-23, at 6:09. Unfortunately, two quick layups from senior forward Daniel Woods (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tied the game, 27-27, at 4:18, when junior guard Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the Chargers on a 12-5 run to intermission, 39-32. In the second half, momentum continued in the Chargers favor as they distanced themselves behind a 13-point lead, 65-52, as play reached the nine-minute mark (9:00). Determined to not go quietly, DiRugeirs was a thorn in the Chargers side. He lead the Griffins on a 29-12 rush that left them down four points, 81-77, on a three-point basket from freshman forward
Jordan McDaniel (Colonia, N.J.) at 1:40. The Chargers hit their free throws to reestablish the margin at seven points, 85-78, before a Dickson three put the spread back at four points, 85-81, with 38 second to play (0:38). The teams traded free throws over the next 28 seconds, but it left the Chargers up seven points, 89-82, enough to survive DiRugeris' three with five seconds to go, 89-85 (0:05), and claim a 91-85 victory.
Smith shot 7-of-14 (50.0%) from the field and 4-of-5 (75.0%) from the free throw line off the Charger bench. He also added four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block to his reserve effort. Porter, Ginyard, and Woods were the other three Chargers in double figures, scoring 16, 14, and 12 points, respectively. Porter provided seven assists from the point.
