Dayter Delivers First CACC Victory; Griffins Split Doubleheader with Lady Rams

3/20/2013 9:32:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/20/2013) – Freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) opened up Chestnut Hill College's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 3-hit masterpiece as she struck out six in the Griffins 1-0, game-one, victory. The Lady Rams managed to split the CACC doubleheader with a 7-5 win in game two as they scored early and often to endure the late offense of freshmen, catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) and second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.).

Philadelphia University (9-9, 2-2) finally got on the scoreboard in their third at-bat of game two. The Lady Rams would score twice on four hits in the third inning to hold their first lead of the day, 2-0. They added two more runs in the fourth inning, 4-0, before Chestnut Hill College (4-6, 1-1) was able to muster a response in the top of the fifth inning. A two-out, two-run double off the bat of Kehr cut the deficit in half, 4-2, but three more Lady Ram run in the bottom of the frame reestablished the home team at 7-2. Unwilling to give in, the Griffins scored a run on a sixth-inning wild pitch, 7-3, and two runs on a seventh-inning, one-out, Heaton homer, before coming up two runs short, 7-5, of the Lady Rams.

Dayter (2-3) dominated the opener as the Lady Rams went hitless until fourth inning, failed to move a runner past second base, and struck out six times in her 1-0 shutout. The Griffins provided Dayter with the only run she needed in the sixth inning. Junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) led off the Griffins at-bat with a single to left field. She then stole second to quickly become the game-winning run on Kehr's misplayed grounder to third base, 1-0. Mattaliano and freshman first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Pa.) led the Griffin offense with two hits apiece.

The softball team breaks from their CACC schedule to visit St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 22.
