Griffins Force Extras In Opener, But Golden Rams Take Charge In Doubleheader Sweep

3/24/2013 6:01:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 West Chester, Pa. – (3/24/2013) – The Chestnut Hill College softball team continued a busy schedule with today's afternoon doubleheader at West Chester University. The Griffins forced extra innings in the opener on a seventh-inning single from junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) and looked to win the contest an inning later on a run-scoring single from freshman center fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.). Unfortunately, the Golden Rams used their last at-bats to their advantage, scoring two runs on one-out, walk-off double. The home team won the second game too, 10-0 in five innings.

Senior pitcher Kate Skokowski (Pottsotwn, Pa.) made quick work of a second game after West Chester University (17-6) edged out Chestnut Hill College (6-8) in the opener. She allowed only one hit, a Carney one-out double in the fourth, while striking out six in the shutout.

The opener offered a lot more suspense with Mattaliano extending a pitcher's duel between senior pitcher Mandi Rush (Royersford, Pa.) and senior pitcher Devon Utterback (Warrington, Pa.) to an eighth inning, 2-2. In the extra frame, the Griffins forced the issue with Carney platting a run with one-out single to left field, 3-2. Unfortunately, a lead-off walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-run double to right center brought the Golden Rams instant victory, 4-3.

The softball team returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule at home on Tuesday, March 26, with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against Georgian Court University.
