Dayter’s Day; Freshman Throws College’s First No-Hitter in CACC Sweep

3/24/2013 2:11:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/23/2013) – It was a day for freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) as she pitched the first no-hitter in Chestnut Hill College history and homered during the Griffins 3-0 game-one win. Dayter also took the mound for the Griffins in game two of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Nyack College. She engaged the Warriors sophomore pitcher Chelsea Macaluso (Charlotte, N.C.) in a 2-2 eight-inning pitcher's duel that was settled with Dayter connecting for a sacrifice fly, 3-2 and junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) singling an insurance run, 4-2, in the game-deciding ninth inning.

Chestnut Hill College (6-6, 3-1) continued the strong start to their 2013 season with today's historical performance against Nyack College (4-3, 0-2). In the second game of the league twin bill, freshman shortstop Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton, Pa.) and freshman center fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) each knocked in runs to give the Griffins a 2-0 second-inning lead. The Warriors tied the contest up in the fourth inning with two runs on three hits and two Griffin errors, 2-2, and that's where the score would stay until the ninth inning. Freshman first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Pa.) put the wheels in motion, reaching on a one-out single in the top of the frame and later scoring on Dayter's sacrifice fly, 3-2. Mattaliano singled immediately afterwards to make the spread 4-2, which served as plenty of insurance for Dayter's 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Dayter put her mark on the College's softball history with her no-hit pitching performance in game-one. She faced one more than the minimum with a first-inning, one-out walk to freshman shortstop Tori Flemming (Plano, Texas) serving as the only blemish on her effort. Dayter also supplied the only run that was truly needed for victory when she connected for the first homerun of her collegiate career in the third inning, 1-0. Two innings later, she reached base on a one-out walk and scored on a miscue by the Warrior centerfielder to give herself a 2-0 advantage. Carney singled in the Griffins third run, Raub, who reach on a one-out double in the sixth inning, 3-0. Dayter struck out 13 in the contest, which also now serves as an all-time single-game record at Chestnut Hill College.

The softball team breaks from CACC play tomorrow, Sunday, March 24, for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at West Chester University.
