Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/2/2013) – Chestnut Hill College opened their 2013 schedule with this afternoon doubleheader against New York Institute of Technology. After scoring the first run in a 4-2 game-one loss, the Griffins gave way to a four-run Bear fourth inning. The Griffins dominated game two with senior pitcher
Mandi Rush (Royersford, Pa.) holding the Bears to one run on five hits in a 5-1 victory. Freshman second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) led the Griffin bats with a 4-of-6 effort.
Helping her own cause, freshman pitcher
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) doubled in freshman center fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) to score the afternoon's first run in the third inning of the opener. Unfortunately, the Chestnut Hill College (1-1) lead did not last long as New York Institute of Technology (3-1) platted four runs in the top of the fourth inning with four hits. The Griffins looked to rally in their final at-bat, but after loading the bases and walking in one run in, junior pitcher Monet Ormsby (Tucson, Ariz.) retired the Griffins for the 4-2 win. Ormsby (2-0) struck out seven in the complete game effort. She allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks. Carney and Heaton each recorded two hits for the Griffins.
The Griffins were first to strike in game two as well, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a homerun from Rush. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Griffins loaded the bases with single before Heaton hustled home on a wild pitch. A double from junior left fielder
Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) and an error by the Bear shortstop permitted two more Griffins to score before the end of the frame, 4-1. Each side platted a run in the fifth inning and went scoreless in the sixth inning to leave the spread at 5-2 heading to the final at-bats. In the seventh inning, Rush (1-0) retired the Bears in four batters to earn the Griffins their first win of the season. Heaton, freshman first baseman
Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.), and junior shortstop
Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton, Pa.) each recorded two hits.
The softball team will host Philadelphia University next in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 7.
