3/7/2013 7:36:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/7/2013) – Chestnut Hill College led off with history this afternoon, as the Griffins secured their first five-inning victory against a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent in game one of today's non-conference doubleheader with Philadelphia University, 12-1 (5 inns.). Junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) headlined the offense with a second-inning grand slam, while freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) took care of the Lady Rams from the mound. The Griffins completed the sweep with a 1-0 shutout behind senior pitcher Mandi Rush (Royersford, Pa.), who allowed only seven Lady Rams to reach base in game two.

Philadelphia University (1-5) put the afternoon's first run on the scoreboard in the top of the first-inning with two-out walk to junior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Township, N.J.), which facilitated a run after a double and a wild pitch, 1-0. But Chestnut Hill College (3-1) did more than answer in the bottom of the frame, as the Griffins platted six runs on two hits and two Lady Ram errors, 6-1. Dayter blanked the Lady Rams in the top of the second inning and in the bottom of the inning it only got worse for the visitors as the Griffins first scored two runs on a double from freshman second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), 8-1, and then platted four more on a grand slam homerun from junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.), 12-1; the first homerun of her collegiate career. From there Dayter took care of the rest, earning the win (1-1) by holding the Lady Rams to one run on two hits and two walks. She struck out three.

Pitching dominated game two, as Rush and freshman Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz.) battled through five and a half scoreless inninings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Rams turned to freshman Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill.). Fortunately, she provided the opportunity for freshman first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) to play hero. Dayter drew a lead-off walk, freshman catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) singled on a bunt, which advanced both runners into scoring position after a throwing error by the Lady Ram first baseman. A line-out double play appeared to quiet the Griffin momentum, but Williams connected for a two-out single to center field that platted Dayter for the win, 1-0, as Rush denied the Lady Rams in their final at-bats, 1-0. Rush improved to 2-0 on the season, holding the Lady Rams to scoreless on nine hits. He struck out three in the complete-game effort.

The softball team concludes their current home stand on Saturday, March 9, with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader against East Stroudsburg University.
