4/1/2013 10:01:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/1/2013) – Chestnut Hill College outslugged Georgian Court University in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with senior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) and freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) both homering in a 7-5 victory. Unfortunately, only the Lions carried their offense into game two as the visitors ended the second game early with six runs in the top of the sixth inning, 13-2. Freshman first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) knocked in both of the Griffins runs with the third of three two-out first-inning singles.

After dropping the opener, Georgian Court University (11-17, 5-3) planned to get revenge with two runs in their first at-bat, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College (7-13, 4-6) temporarily interrupted the Lions plans with two-out singles from freshman catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.), freshman third baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), and Williams resulting in two Griffin runs, 2-2. The Lions reclaimed the lead with a run in the second inning, 3-2, before scoring in each of their remaining at-bats to a 13-2 six-inning final.

The Griffins struck first in the opener with Mattaliano leading off the doubleheader with a homerun to center field, 1-0. The Lions responded in the third inning with a homerun of their own, 1-1, but they outscored the Griffins 2-1 in the fourth inning to control a 3-2 advantage heading to the later frames. Back-to-back one-out errors put Griffins on the corners in the fifth inning. A Heaton single plated the first run, 3-3, and the following Williams single to center field brought home two more runs, 5-3, before Soller's two-out homer, the first of her collegiate career,  added two more points on the scoreboard, 7-3. The insurance runs would come in handy for freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) who would hold on for the victory (5-5), the Griffins first ever over the Lions, despite a sixth-inning, two-run homerun from junior second baseman Justine Mattia (Williamstown, N.J.).

The softball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 6, with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Caldwell College.
