Griffins Drop Two CACC Games At Wilmington University

4/17/2013 12:03:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New Castle, Del. – (4/16/2013) – Overpowering and efficient, Wilmington University scored 24 runs on 25 hits to defeat Chestnut Hill College in two run-shortened games 14-1 and 10-0 in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. Freshman second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) knocked in the Griffins only with a fourth-inning double in the opener, then freshman catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) and freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) recorded the Griffins only hits in game two.

Junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) led off the first game for Chestnut Hill College (8-22, 5-15) with an infield single, but the Griffins would not put another runner on the base paths until after Wilmington University (26-16, 13-5) brought 14 runs across the plate. The Griffins looked to get something going in the fourth inning with Kehr singling to left field and Heaton doubling her home before the Wildcats recorded an out, 14-1. Unfortunately, the Griffins could not muster any more production off sophomore pitcher Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna, Del.) (10-7) who allowed one run on four hits while striking out eight in five innings.

The Griffins had a runner on second base in their first two at-bats of game two, but could not get any of the home team's momentum as the Wildcats scored six runs in their half of the second inning for a 6-0 advantage. They added four more runs in the fourth inning while senior pitcher Katie Warrington (Townsend, Del.) and junior pitcher Danielle Griffin (Greenwood, Del.) held the Griffins hitless for the remainder of the contest.

The softball team plays their next CACC games at Goldey-Beacom College on Friday, April 19. The opener is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
