Griffin Bats Strike First, but Mavericks Strike Last In Softball Sweep

4/25/2013 10:44:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/25/2013) – Chestnut Hill College put the afternoon's first three runs on the scoreboard, but Mercy College erased the home advantage by the third inning, 4-3, before scoring seven late runs en route to an 11-4 win in the opener of today's doubleheader. The Mavericks took game two as well, clinching a 4-0 pitcher's duel with three late runs. Freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) went 5-for-8 in the twin bill and knocked in a run during the Griffins first at-bat.

Looking to get even after Mercy College (23-13) took the opener, Chestnut Hill College (11-25) relied on the arm of senior pitcher Mandi Rush (Royersford, Pa.) to keep the second contest close. Her counterpart, junior pitcher Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) held the Griffins to four hits and a walk while her offense provided one run early and three late in a 4-0 victory. Soller recorded two of the Griffins four hits, doubling in the second inning and singling in the fourth.

After holding the Mavericks scoreless in their first at-bat, the Griffins plated three runs with some hustle and a little luck. Junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) led off the afternoon with a single through the left side. She reached second base, avoiding a dropped tag, while freshman center fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) took first base on the fielder's choice. A grounder to shortstop advanced the Griffin runners, who both scored with another grounder to shortstop, 1-0, a beam ball, and a Soller single to left field, 2-0. Another hit batswomen loaded the bases for freshman shortstop Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton, Pa.), who drew a two-out walk to score the Griffins third run, 3-0. Unfortunately, the lead vanished as quickly as it came with the Golden Bears scoring two runs in the second inning, 3-2, two in the third, 4-3, four in the fifth, 8-3, and three in the sixth, 11-3, to overcome a late Griffin run in an 11-4 final.

The softball team will conclude their 2013 season in their final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, April 27.
