4/27/2013 8:58:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Orangeburg, N.Y. – (4/27/2013) – The 2013 season came to a close for the Chestnut Hill College softball team with this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Dominican College. The Griffins led the CACC-leading Lady Chargers early in the opener, but a seven-run fifth inning powered the home team to a 7-4 win in game one. With momentum in hand, the Lady Chargers ended the second game early, 9-1 in five innings.

After Dominican College (30-18, 25-1) came on late in game one, it was Chestnut Hill College (11-27, 8-18) who hoped to score late in game two. The Lady Chargers built an 8-0 advantage over their first four at-bats to put the pressure on the Griffins in the top of the fifth inning. They came through, scoring on a one-out error, a single from senior pitcher Mandi Rush (Royersford, Pa.), and a run-scoring grounder to the first baseman from freshman shortstop Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton, Pa.), 8-1. Unfortunately, the Lady Chargers matched the run with two two-out singles and an error allowing the home team to end the game in the bottom of the fifth frame, 9-1.

The Griffins jumped on the Lady Chargers in the opener, using a commanding start from freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) to build a 3-0 advantage behind a second-inning homer from freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.), 1-0, two third-inning Lady Charger errors, 2-0, and a lead-off fourth-inning homerun from freshman second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J), 3-0. A fifth-inning homerun from Dayter briefly extended the advantage to 4-0, but in the bottom of the frame the Lady Chargers platted seven runs with seven hits, including two two-run homeruns and a two-run double, that stole the opener, 7-4.

The softball team finishes the 2013 season, their second under Head Coach John Kelly, at 11-27 overall and 8-18 in CACC play.
