Griffins Sink Clippers in Opener to Split CACC Double Dip

4/8/2013 9:16:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/8/2013) – Earning a split in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, Chestnut Hill College took the opener from Concordia College (NY) 5-4 before losing the nightcap, 8-2. Freshman catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the win, while freshman second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) and freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) each offered two hits in game two.

After disposing of Concordia College (5-18, 4-10) in their first at-bats, Chestnut Hill College (8-16, 5-9) put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with two-run single to center field from freshman first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.), 2-0. The Clippers the responded and took the lead with three runs on five third-inning hits, 3-2, but the wheels fell off the visitors defense in the fourth inning, allowing three Griffins to score on two hits and two errors, 5-3. A sixth-inning sacrifice fly made things interesting, 5-4, as the Clippers pulled within one run of the home team. Fortunately, freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) sat the Clippers down in order in the top of the seventh inning to seal the victory (6-7).

In game two, the Clippers threatened to end the affair early as they kept the Griffins off the scoreboard while platting eight runs of their own on 11 hits and four errors, 8-0. Soller's bat would keep the contest going. A lead-off walk to Dayter brought Soller to the plate with a runner on base. After watching ball one, Soller launched the next offering over the left field fence to deliver two runs, 8-2, and extend the contest for at least two more frames. Unfortunately, the seventh inning was as long as the contest would go with the Clippers closing the contest out on the six-run spread.

The softball team plays their next CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10, when they welcome the University of the Sciences to campus of a 3:00 p.m. opener.
