Griffins Greet Home Crowd, Victorious Over Vulcans

9/7/2013 9:32:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (9/7/2013) – Junior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) energized Chestnut Hill College early and headed a tick-tack-toe relay that resulted in lone goal of today's men's soccer home opener. The Griffins initial aggression earned them a 1-0 lead halfway past the ten-minute mark and with possession they controlled the remainder of the game clock.

Junior midfielder Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) managed the midfield early in the contest while Amaya pressured the California University (PA) (1-1) defense with several strong runs at the Vulcan goal. His persistence quickly paid off as he completed a bang-bang exchange from junior midfielder Hernan Angulo (Lima, Peru) and senior forward Darryl Richardson Jr. (Washington Township, Pa.) at 10:28 of the opening half, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (1-1) then fended off the Vulcans attacks, denying a few before freshman defenseman Nick Calla (Halifax, Pa.) was denied by freshman goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) on the Vulcans lone first-half shot-on-goal. After the break, the Vulcans increased their shot output and forced three corner kick opportunities as they rifled off seven strikes in Jackson's direction. He turned away the only three he needed to in order to earn his first collegiate shutout and win (1-1).

In the second half, it was junior midfielder Jeffrey Kyei (Tubingen, Germany) that attempted to lead the Vulcans past the Griffin defense. He was unsuccessful, thanks to Jackson, and a strong defensive front led by senior Brooks Mirabella (Hockessin, Del.), freshman Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany), junior David Schlentz (West Chester, Pa.), and Tristan Johns (Mamora, N.J.). In goal, junior Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa.) made one save in the loss (1-1).

Jaffe took three shots, but it was Amaya's head that took the only shot that the Griffins needed for the victory. Angulo put in the initial effort, chasing down a ball in the right corner and locating Richardson who redirected the ball to Amaya for the score in the bottom left corner. Jackson made four saves in the win (1-1).

The men's soccer team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with their next contest, a 4:00 p.m. home game on Wednesday, September 11, against Georgian Court University.
