Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/2/2014) – In a close-knit Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) battle, Chestnut Hill College and Holy Family University traded leads until the final buzzer. But on a night when nothing was out of range for freshman guard
Billy Cassidy (Primos, Pa.), the Griffins stole the upper hand in the final five minutes of play and endured the Tigers for a 62-57 victory. Graduate guard
Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) led the Griffins with 17 points, but Cassidy's 16 points and a near double-double from junior forward
Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) were significant contributions to the triumph.
In the opening act, turnovers kept Chestnut Hill College (4-8, 2-3) from running away with the contest as a last-second runner in the lane from senior guard
Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) allowed the Griffins to tie Holy Family University (8-5, 2-2), 32-32, heading to the break. Cassidy hit 3-of-5 (.600 3PT%) from three-point range in the first half, but it was his fourth three-point basket, from just inside the half court line, that finally put the game in the Griffins hands.
The Griffins came out strong in the second half, taking their largest lead, 41-34, with 16:11 left to play. In response, the Tigers issued a 19-6 run of their own that gave them their largest lead, 53-47, on a fast break alley-oop by sophomore forward Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 8:18 remaining. But again, Cassidy would be the Griffins sparkplug. After a Sekulic bucket, Cassidy scored seven straight points, including his deep three-point basket, to put the Griffins up one point, 56-55, with less than five minutes to play (4:43). From there, a Tiger miss and a clutch Sekulic basket allowed Trevisan to put the game on ice with the contest's terminal free throws.
The Tigers were led by 15 points, three rebounds, four assists, eight steals, and a block from senior guard Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J.). Senior guard Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C.) recorded 13 points, six rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while sophomore forward Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with eight points and ten boards.
Trevisan recorded a game-high 17 points with his 8-of-9 (.889 FT%) free throw performance upstaging his 4-of-10 (.400 FG%) shooting effort. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Cassidy concluded the game with 16 points, hitting 4-of-7 (.571 3PT%) from long range in his 6-of-9 (.667 FG%) shooting effort. Sekulic finished with 12 points, nine boards, and three assists.
The men's basketball team will continue their CACC schedule on Saturday, January 4, when they host Caldwell College in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
