Spinuzza Hat Trick Headlines Griffins Breakout Win Over Clippers

10/11/2014 2:16:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/11/2014) – An early-morning wake-up call was just what the doctor ordered for the Chestnut Hill College women's soccer team, who rolled to a 6-0 victory over visiting Concordia College (N.Y.) on the strength of the first collegiate hat trick by junior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.). The Griffins scored more goals this morning than they had in the season's first 10 games (5), ending a five-game losing streak in style and logging their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) shutout.

Playing a rare 10:00 a.m. contest, Chestnut Hill College (2-9, 2-5) wasted little time jumping on top of Concordia College (0-7-1, 0-6), riding the combination of Spinuzza and fellow junior midfielder Victoria Fedora (East McKeesport, Pa.) to a quick lead on a rainy morning. Fedora found Spinuzza with a cross through the box, and Spinuzza fired home a right-footed shot for her first goal of the season at 4:11, 1-0.

Next came a stretch of three goals in less than five minutes that put the game away for the Griffins, who had scored a total of five goals before Saturday. Freshman forward Kylee Jazikoff (Brick, N.J.) scored from just outside the box off a touch pass by senior midfielder Lauren Bjorke (Sinking Spring, Pa.) at 20:46, 2-0. Less than 90 seconds later (22:04), Fedora and Spinuzza connected again, with Spinuzza volleying home a perfect cross from Fedora at the far post, 3-0. Spinuzza's second goal came shortly thereafter (25:24), as the junior outran a Clippers defender to a ball in the offensive end and calmly found the back of the net on a shot from just inside the box, 4-0.

The Griffins, who were coming off a 6-0 loss at Dowling College just three days earlier, took a 5-0 lead on a spectacular strike from senior midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.), who chipped the Concordia College keeper from 40 yards out for a stunning goal at 60:06. Spinuzza completed her hat trick, the first by a Griffin since Carly DiGiovanni '14 scored three times against the Clippers in 2012, at 78:24, when she cleaned up the rebound off a powerful shot by sophomore Alissa Battaglia (Merrick, N.Y.), 6-0.

Spinuzza, who also scored in the Griffins' 5-2 victory over Concordia College on September 15, 2012, finished with a career-high seven points, the most by a Chestnut Hill College player since Kaelyn Pizarro '14 recorded seven in an 8-0 rout of Lincoln University on October 4, 2010. Spinuzza entered Saturday's contest with eight career points (two goals and four assists).

Chestnut Hill College finished with 16 points (six goals, four assists) on the day, four more than their entire output in the season's first 10 contests. The Griffins held a 19-9 advantage in shots, with Spinzza leading the way with four. Battaglia, Jazikoff, and Fedora had three apiece.

Freshman Kaela Blanco (Laguna Hills, Calif.) paced the Concordia College attack with four shots, and sophomore Amanda Scherb (Kings Park, N.Y.) attempted three.

Junior transfer Kayla Reno (Catonsville, Md.) started in goal for the second time as a Griffin, making four saves for her first career shutout (1-1).

The Griffins return to CACC play on Wednesday, October 15, when they welcome Holy Family University to Victory Field #1 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
