Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/31/2014) – Chestnut Hill College's seven seniors made sure to their swan song was a thriller in this afternoon's Senior Day matchup with visiting West Virginia Wesleyan College. After honoring their veterans, the Griffins overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits in the second half to pull even for the second time on the second goal of the day by junior forward
Channing Couillard (Atlantic Beach, Fla.), 3-3 (61:18), but the Bobcats ultimately prevailed when senior midfielder Mike Geiselhart (Apollo, Fla.) scored with 9:11 remaining to hand the visitors a 4-3 decision in the Griffins regular-season finale.
Chestnut Hill College (8-9-1) was outshot, 13-1, in the first half, after which they trailed 2-0. Junior forward Alex Zidani (Sarasota, Fla.) had a foot in both goals for West Virginia Wesleyan College (8-6-3), setting up the opening salvo by freshman midfielder Paul Smith (Glasgow, Scotland), 1-0 (31:30) and netting a goal of his own at 35:27, 2-0.
The Griffins came out firing after intermission, finding the back of the net on each of their first two shots of the second half. Couillard cut the deficit in half, 2-1, just 3:35 into the period when he tapped in a free kick by junior forward
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) at the back post. Just over two minutes later, freshman midfielder
Sebastien Hilaire (Panama City, Panama) scored his first career goal, volleying in a corner kick from freshman midfielder
Joseph Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.), 2-2 (50:51).
The Bobcats regained the advantage when senior midfielder Thomas Capstick (Ottawa, Canada) deposited his own rebound, 3-2 (57:21). Undaunted, Chestnut Hill College once again had a response. Couillard chested in a perfect cross from senior defenseman
Dominic Pernice (Lewis, De.) to make it 3-3 at the 61:18 mark. The Griffins were unable to get over the hump, however, and Geiselhart's marker with 9:11 to play proved to be the game-winner.
West Virginia Wesleyan gained a 29-8 advantage in shots, led by six from substitute, freshman defenseman Evan Miles (Hurricane, W. Va.). Capstick recorded five shots, while Smith, Zidani, and senior midfielder Nick Amberman (Shrewsbury, Pa.) attempted four apiece. Junior goalkeeper Luka Pauk made one save (2-2-0).
Couillard was the focus of the Chestnut Hill College attack, scoring on all but one of his three shots. Hilaire, Amaya, Casaletto, Pernice, and freshman defenseman
Justin Kekatos (Barnegat, N.J.) each took one shot for the Griffins. Seniors
Travis Powers (Hewitt, N.J.) and
Frederick Kissinger III (Cinnaminson, N.J.) each saw significant action in goal in their final collegiate home game. Each made five saves, with Kissinger replacing Powers 2:09 into the second half after playing in the field during the first period.
Senior midfielders
Michael Hester (Seaford, N.Y.) and
Georges Beyiha (Yaoundé, Cameroon) and defensemen
David Schlentz (West Chester, Pa.) and
Colin Boyle (Mount Bethel, Pa.) played well in their last game at Victory Field #1.
Chestnut Hill College concludes the regular season with an 8-9-1 record and a 7-4-1 mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The Griffins will be the #5 seed in next week's CACC Championship Tournament, and will travel to fourth-seeded Caldwell University for a first-round clash on Tuesday, November 4.
