Griffins Dig Deep, But Tigers Snap Home Winning Streak

10/8/2014 8:39:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/8/2014) – The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team refused to go quietly, fighting back from 23-22 down in the third set and staving off four match points in the fourth, but Holy Family University outlasted the Griffins for a pivotal 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory in this evening's Side-Out Foundation Dig Pink Night contest. With first place in the CACC South Division on the line, the Griffins were not quite able to get over the hump in seeing their six-game home winning streak come to an end.

Chestnut Hill College (10-9, 5-3) was slow out of the gates, dropping the first two sets by identical 25-15 margins as Holy Family University (8-10, 6-2) took command of the match behind the serving of Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn.) and the potent attacking of freshman Melanie Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa.). Herring had seven of the Tigers' 14 aces, including four in a row during a crucial first-half stretch in which the visitors turned a 13-12 deficit into an 18-13 advantage en route to capturing the opening set, 25-15. Ingram posted a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 16 digs, and junior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill.) had three of her 14 kills during a 6-0 run to close the second set, 25-15.

The Griffins, who came into the match tied with Holy Family University and Wilmington (Del.) University atop the South Division standings, were two points away from being swept, 23-22, in the third set, before rattling off three straight points to stay alive. Sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) capped the rally with an ace to secure a 25-23 decision, 2-1.

Things looked bleak again for Chestnut Hill College in the fourth set, when the Tigers obtained a 24-20 lead. The Griffins, however, dug deep and fought off four consecutive match points, three on kills by senior right side hitter Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.), 24-24. But a service error gave Holy Family University another chance to end the match, and the Tigers did just that on a kill by Herring, taking over sole possession of first place in the South Division and handing Chestnut Hill College its first loss inside Sorgenti Arena since the home opener on Tuesday, September 9, against West Chester University.

The Griffins hit -.069 (6K-8E-29TA) in the first set but rebounded as the match wore on, posting a .185 mark (14K-4E-54TA) in the fourth set. Junior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), the reigning CACC Player of the Week, led the way with 11 kills, while Shock hit a match-high .308 (10K-2E-26TA) and posted a season-best 10 kills.

The two teams combined for 172 digs on Dig Pink Night, with the Griffins holding a slight advantage, 87-85. Sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) posted a match-best 27, while junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) added 16, junior defensive specialist Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) contributed 13, and freshman Peyton Reno (Wilmington, DE) chipped in 10 to go along with a season-high four aces. Tamsing also fueled the Griffin attack with 31 assists. Sophomore Laura Tamas (Rhode-St-Genese, Belgium) paced the Tigers with 23 digs, and senior Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa.) finished with 22.

The Griffins return to CACC play on Saturday, October 11, when they travel to Caldwell College for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
