Box Score Kutztown, Pa. - (11/24/2014) – It was a tale of two halves for the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team in tonight's game at Kutztown University. After controlling most of the opening period, holding a 31-22 advantage with 3:50 to play, the Griffins went cold from the field as the host Golden Bears broke free with several back-breaking runs before coasting to a 78-53 victory in the non-conference tilt.
Chestnut Hill College (1-4) rode the early hot hand of senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.), who scored 10 points and went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe in the first half. The Griffin captain helped them to a nine-point edge, 31-22, inside the four-minute mark on a pair of free throws, but
Kutztown University (2-1) looked to turn the tide before the break, clamping down on the Griffins and holding them scoreless, 11-0, over the final 3:50 of the half, 33-31. The Griffins regained the lead with two quick baskets after halftime, the last on a fast-break layup by freshman guard
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.), 35-33, with 19:32 to play.
Unfortunately, that was as good as it got for Chestnut Hill College, as Kutztown University outscored the Griffins, 45-18, from that point on, starting with a 13-2 run to supply a 46-37 lead at the 16:39 mark. And after a three-pointer by senior guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.), 46-40, the Golden Bears uncorked an 11-1 spurt to make it 57-41 with 13:04 remaining. The Griffins scored the next four points, 57-45, before falling victim to a six-minute drought, during which Kutztown University managed another big run (9-0) to put the game out of reach, 66-45 (6:20). The Golden Bears went in front by as many as 28 (78-50) before Chestnut Hill College cut the final margin to 25 points, 78-53.
Sophomore guard Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J.) paced three Golden Bears in double figures with 16 points (6-of-11 FG, 3-of-5 3FG). Seniors, forward Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J.), 15 points and nine rebounds, and guard Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, Pa.), 12 points and nine rebounds, each narrowly missed a double-double for Kutztown University, which posted a 50-36 rebounding advantage.
Gorczynski overcame a slow start to finish with a team-high 14 points for Chestnut Hill College, which shot just 27.6% (16-of-58) from the field, including 20.6% (7-of-34) after halftime, and committed 24 turnovers. Felder joined her in double figures for the third time this season with 12 points; the guard tandem led the defensive effort as well, with Felder (4) and Gorczysnki (3) combining for seven of the team's 12 steals. Senior guard
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.), eight points and six rebounds, and sophomore forward
Lauren Milligan (Gosport, England), seven points and seven rebounds, offered balanced efforts for the Griffins, while freshman forward
Brianne Morgera (Newport, R.I.) paired a career-high 11 rebounds with five points and three blocks. Milligan added three steals and a pair of blocks.
The Griffins head home for Thanksgiving Break and have more than a week off before opening their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Wilmington University on Wednesday, December 3.
