Turner, Frontcourt Impress, But Lightning Zaps Griffins Behind Brilliant Chukwueze

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/17/2014) – Chestnut Hill College senior transfer Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) scripted an impressive debut in tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tilt with visiting Goldey-Beacom College, helping the Griffins win the rebounding battle for the first time all season. Nevertheless, there was no stopping senior guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, N.J.), who went off for a game-high 32 points as the Lightning rolled to a 72-50 victory in a meeting of old friends.

Chestnut Hill College (2-7, 1-3) got an immediate boost from Turner, who scored their first four points and finished with a team-high 14 to go along with nine rebounds in her first game since transferring from National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I University of Cincinnati. The Griffins hung with Goldey-Beacom College (4-8, 3-1), coached by Chestnut Hill College women's basketball alumnus Bethann Burke, for much of the first half, trailing by a slim 21-16 margin with 8:53 to play in the period. The frontcourt trio of Turner and freshmen forwards Brianne Morgera (Newport, R.I.) and Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) scored all but two of the first 16 points for the home side as the Griffins continually pounded the ball inside for easy buckets.

The Lightning rattled off the next 10 points to go ahead 31-16 (5:21), eventually taking a 41-25 lead into intermission. They led by as many as 21 (46-25) less than two minutes into the second half before a spirited surge brought Chestnut Hill College back to within seven (52-45), at the midway point of the second half. Senior guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) capped the 16-4 run with five straight points, including a three-pointer that brought the Griffins back to within single digits. Unfortunately, after calling timeout the Lightning scored the next nine points, holding Chestnut Hill College scoreless over a span of 4:23 before senior guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) stopped the bleeding with a layup, 61-47 (5:16). By then it was too late, as Goldey-Beacom College kept the Griffins off the board for the next three-plus minutes and ran the bulge up to as many as 22 with the final margin of 72-50.

Chukwueze was ruthlessly efficient for the Lightning, going 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the field while also collecting seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. She was backed up by a double-double from freshmen forward Britani Bryson (Hampton, Va.), 15 points and 11 rebounds, as well as a 10-point, 9-rebound effort from freshman guard Lexi Bruno (Millville, N.J.), who handed out five assists. Goldey-Beacom College used 13 assists to offset a mere nine turnovers, only two of which came in the first half.

In addition to Turner, Parriski produced the best performance of her young career, recording her first double-double with career highs of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Parriski also came up with six blocked shots, the second-highest total by a Griffin since the program joined NCAA Division II in 2007. Morgera grabbed nine caroms for Chestnut Hill College, which edged the Lightning on the glass, 47-44. Gorczynski finished with 13 points.

Chestnut Hill College has one day off before returning to Sorgenti Arena for a non-conference contest against Dowling College on Friday, December 19, at 2:00 p.m.
