Griffins Turn Tide With Late Run, Leave Wildcats Behind in CACC Opener

Box Score Wilmington, Del. - (12/3/2014) – The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team flipped the script from its last time out, overcoming a slow start by dominating the second half in winning its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for the first time in six seasons, ending on the right side of a 72-57 spread at Wilmington University (Del.) tonight. After trailing by as many as seven (27-20) in the first half, the Griffins used a critical 18-2 spurt late in the second half to pull away and secure their first victory in a conference opener since the 2008-2009 campaign. Senior guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.), 21 points, and freshman forward Brianne Morgera (Newport, R.I.), 12 points and 13 rebounds, provided a potent inside-outside punch to spark the visitors.
 
Chestnut Hill College (2-4, 1-0) opened with a 6-2 advantage before Wilmington University (1-7, 0-2) found its footing, using a string of nine straight points to go ahead, 27-20, at the 3-minute mark of the first half. The Wildcats took a 33-30 edge into intermission, which the Griffins quickly erased on three straight free throws by senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.), 33-33 (19:48). Back and forth the teams went, with neither able to gain much separation until Chestnut Hill College left the home side behind with a big run. Leading 51-49 with 7:52 remaining, Gorczynski and Felder led the Griffins on an 18-2 burst, scoring six points apiece and helping to hold the Wildcats to a single field goal against six turnovers as the visitors took a commanding 69-51 lead on a lay-in by Morgera (1:37) before settling for a 15-point discrepancy, 72-57.
 
Sophomore forward Jasmine Lee (Chestertown, Md.) was the focal point of the Wilmington University offense. She scored a team-high 13 points on 6-of-7 (86.7%) shooting from the floor, while junior guard Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 but was held to just 4-of-17 (23.5%) shooting. Senior forward Jennifer Carr (Federalsburg, Md.) pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
 
Gorczynski finished 9-of-20 (45.0%) from the field in hitting the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season for Chestnut Hill College. She also contributed four assists. Felder offered a season-high 15 points, mostly thanks to a 7-of-8 (77.8%) performance at the line. The senior captain dished out three assists and collected three steals as the Griffins harried Wilmington University into 20 turnovers. Morgera, meanwhile, had 11 rebounds at halftime en route to her first career double-double. The CACC's block leader (2.8 BPG), Morgera also rejected three shots.
 
Senior guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) grabbed a season-high nine boards to go with five points and three assists, while freshman forward Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) had eight points and four rebounds and sophomore forward Lauren Milligan (Gosport, England) snagged eight caroms to match a career high.
 
Chestnut Hill College is back in action on Saturday, December 6, against defending CACC champion Bloomfield College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Sorgenti Arena.
