Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/6/2014) – The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team stayed within shouting distance of defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for a half. After that, it was all Bears, as the visitors broke the league contest open with a big run right out of intermission and rolled to a 78-56 victory. Freshman guard
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.) did everything she could to keep the Griffins in it, going off for a career-high 23 points on 13-of-14 (92.9%) shooting from the line, but Bloomfield College and its commanding advantage on the glass proved too much for the hosts to match.
Chestnut Hill College (2-5, 1-1) held a slim 11-10 edge at the 14:12 mark of the first half, but Bloomfield College (3-3, 1-1) took command with a 12-0 run to gain a 22-11 lead (7:50). The Griffins stayed within reach until halftime, by which they trailed by only eight, 35-27. After the break, however, the Bears turned on the jets, responding to a three-pointer by Mazzarelli, 37-30 (19:20) with a 15-2 spurt that grew the bulge to 20, 52-32 (14:10). The advantage got as large as 23, 56-33 (12:25), and Chestnut Hill College never got closer than 15 the rest of the way as the Bears finished with a 22-point spread, 78-56.
Junior guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) was all over the court for the Bears, tallying a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 17 points, three assists, and four steals. Freshman guard De'Andra Humphries (Bostom, Mass.) played the role of offensive leader, netting a team-high 18 points. Sophomore guard Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) offered 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while senior center Tierra Scott (Bear, Del.) controlled the interior with 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and six steals for Bloomfield College, which collected 23 offensive rebounds en route to doubling up the Griffins on the boards (48-24).
Mazzarelli finished 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the field and made both of her attempts from distance to post her best outing as a collegiate athlete. Her supporting cast proved lacking, however, as no other Griffin managed to hit double figures. Senior guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.), who came in averaging 19.0 points-per-game (PPG) to rank fourth in the league, had just seven points on 2-of-13 shooting (15.4%), although the captain did hand out four assists and swipe three steals. Sophomore forward
Lauren Milligan (Gosport, England) joined Gorczynski with seven points in addition to two blocks and a pair of steals.
The Griffins have a week off before their next contest, a 2:00 p.m. date with crosstown rival Philadelphia University on Saturday, December 13.
